Alex was first elected to the Hercules City Council in 2020. He is a proud product of the city and its schools, attending Ohlone Elementary, Hercules Middle School, and Hercules High School. Alex’s passion for service started at a young age in church, where he and his peers regularly sent care packages to children worldwide. As the son of a firefighter, Alex would watch his late father go to work every day and found deep inspiration in his commitment to helping others.
By the age of 10, through his fifth grade Ohlone teacher, Ms.Nam, his mother, and late grandmother, he found his interest in government service; by the age of 13, he was working on statewide campaigns, and by 17 years old, he organized his first waterfront cleanup. In high school, Alex and his classmates started the Herban Movement while students at Hercules High School developed environmentally friendly bags and cookbooks. The group would win several awards, including the Microsoft Social Innovation Award.
Shortly after graduating high school, Alex lost his father experiences following his death, which sparked him to dedicate his life to serving others. After a semester at Diablo Valley College, Alex transferred to Contra Costa College and quickly became involved on campus. He served as President of Community Organizing and Political Action, registering hundreds of students to vote. He later would serve in the student government as a senator, vice president, and two-term student body president. As Student Body President, he established the college’s first free breakfast, school supplies, and bus pass program.
Governor Jerry Brown took a chance on Alex. He appointed him to the California Community Colleges Board of Governors, where he represented 2.3 million students and oversaw the nation’s largest higher education system. In his time on the board of governors, he successfully worked to make community college tuition-free, expanded broadband to rural areas in the state, and expanded access to higher education in underserved areas. He is also one of the founding members of Calbright College, the nation’s first 100 percent online community college that aims to close the gap in workforce education.
During his time in community college, Alex put himself through college working different jobs from Franklin Canyon Golf Course in Hercules as a cook and a golf ball washer, the San Pablo Senior Center, worked as a Camp Consoler in El Cerrito, and worked with children with special needs for nearly three years. Alex never skipped a beat in college and always found time to pursue internships to make a better future for himself. He felt the calling to serve his country and joined the military. Initially entering the military as a private first class, Alex would go on to mobilize to events such as the 2018 Camp Fire in Paradise, California. After leaving community college, he transferred to Saint Mary’s College of California, where he received his bachelor’s degree in Politics.
